Measurable objectives help us know whether and how students are making progress around the knowledge and skills we’ve identified as important for them. Why do measurable course objectives matter? Research shows that when students engage in activities that focus on specific goals and that challenge them beyond their current ability, their chances of learning increase. Measurable learning outcomes help instructors, programs, and institutions analyze whether students are actually achieving the goals we've set out for them. Along with indicating an instructor’s performance level, evaluators are encouraged to provide specific evidence that the instructor is meeting the standard, as well as comment on the instructor’s strengths and areas for improvement.Ī learning objective or outcome is a simple, concise statement that tells students what they should be able to do as a result of working through your course. Because of the diversity and creativity of UW’s faculty, it is impossible to list all the ways an instructor could potentially meet the standard. Evaluators should not mistake the examples as a checklist of requirements.

This list of examples is by no means comprehensive. Within each standard, there are examples of the types of things an evaluator might look for as evidence that the instructor has met the standard.
